The three-day International Seminar on “The Role of Tilak in National Integration”, organized by the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Rashtrapati Niwas, Shimla, concluded today with detailed academic discussions on Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s ideas of nationalism, cultural renaissance, Swaraj, Karmayoga, Swadeshi, religious harmony and the Indian Knowledge Tradition.
The seminar brought together eminent academicians, historians, philosophers and researchers from India and abroad, who explored Tilak’s contribution to India’s cultural identity, ethical values and national integration.
Delivering the valedictory address, Professor Sunaina Singh, former Vice-Chancellor of Nalanda University, said that India’s strength lies in its rich knowledge traditions, cultural diversity and moral values. She emphasized the need to connect the Indian Knowledge Tradition with modern education, research and public policy to address contemporary challenges.
Professor Singh highlighted that universities should not only impart knowledge but also nurture responsible and socially conscious citizens. She described Tilak’s ideas of Swaraj, Karmayoga and cultural self-respect as enduring sources of inspiration for national development.
Presiding over the concluding session, Professor Shashi Prabha Kumar, Chairperson, IIAS, said that Tilak’s philosophy remains a vital part of India’s national consciousness. She emphasized that cultural values, social harmony and historical awareness are essential for strengthening national integration.
Professor Himanshu Kumar Chaturvedi, Director, IIAS, stated that the Institute is committed to promoting academic dialogue on India’s philosophical, cultural and historical traditions. He said the seminar provided a platform to examine Tilak’s thoughts through interdisciplinary perspectives.
Presenting the seminar report, Professor R. C. Sinha, National Fellow at IIAS and Convener of the seminar, said that scholars examined Tilak’s contributions as a thinker, philosopher, educationist, journalist and cultural revivalist. The technical sessions covered themes including nationalism, Gita Rahasya, Karmayoga, Lokasangraha, Swadeshi, education, decolonization and Indian Knowledge Systems.
Scholars from various universities and institutions across India and abroad presented research papers highlighting the contemporary relevance of Tilak’s vision. The discussions underlined that his ideals of Swaraj, self-reliance, cultural awareness and ethical responsibility continue to guide India’s intellectual and social development.
The concluding session featured the presentation of the seminar report by Dr. Jahira Khatun, Fellow, IIAS. The proceedings were moderated by Dr. Akhilesh Pathak, PRO, IIAS, while the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Rajeev Kumar Mishra, Librarian and Academic Resource Officer, IIAS.
