The Himachal Pradesh government has launched an ambitious “Mission-32 Percent” with the goal of increasing the state’s green cover to 32 percent by 2030. At present, the forest cover stands at around 29.5 percent, and the Forest Department has begun extensive planning and strategic interventions to achieve the revised target in a phased manner, in line with the vision of CM Sukhu.

The initiative is a significant step toward positioning Himachal Pradesh as a model “Green Himalayan State,” with a strong focus on environmental sustainability and climate resilience. The plan emphasizes biodiversity conservation, ecological restoration, and the protection of soil and water resources, while also addressing the impacts of climate change.

Beyond environmental gains, the mission is also expected to strengthen rural livelihoods by creating sustainable income opportunities through afforestation, eco-restoration, agroforestry, and community-driven participation. Various programmes under CAMPA, externally aided projects, and departmental schemes are being actively implemented to support these objectives.

For the financial year 2026–27, a plantation target of 8,000 hectares has been set, with special emphasis on indigenous and fruit-bearing species to improve ecological balance and enhance livelihood opportunities for local communities.

Since assuming office, the present state government has introduced several green initiatives, including the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojna, Mukhyamantri Van Vistar Yojna, and the Rajiv Gandhi Green Adoption Scheme, aimed at large-scale afforestation and ecological restoration.

Under the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojna, plantation activities are planned across nearly 4,000 hectares during 2026–27 through 1,100 community groups, with participation from 60 percent women’s groups, 20 percent youth groups, and 20 percent other self-help groups.

CM Sukhu stated that the government remains fully committed to environmental conservation and will continue to promote renewable energy, natural farming, plastic waste management, and sustainable mountain development as core pillars of its green growth strategy. He added that these collective efforts will help Himachal Pradesh emerge as a leading example of ecological stewardship and sustainable development in the country.
