World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed globally on 31 May every year to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and to encourage effective policies for reducing tobacco consumption. Initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO), the day highlights the health risks associated with smoking and nicotine addiction, including cancer, heart disease, stroke and respiratory illnesses. It also focuses on exposing the tactics used by tobacco companies to attract young users through advertising, flavours and marketing strategies. Governments, health organisations and civil society groups use this occasion to promote anti-tobacco campaigns, strengthen tobacco control laws, and encourage people to quit tobacco for a healthier life.
