1987

World Health Organization (WHO) established World No Tobacco Day to highlight the global health risks of tobacco use and promote awareness about its harmful effects

2003

WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) was adopted as the first global public health treaty to regulate tobacco use, advertising, packaging and control measures

2005

The FCTC came into force, making international tobacco control commitments legally binding for participating countries

2007

World No Tobacco Day campaigns began aligning more closely with FCTC objectives, focusing on stronger enforcement of tobacco control policies

2013

Global campaigns highlighted the need to ban tobacco advertising, especially targeting youth through media, packaging and promotional strategies

2020

WNTD theme focused on protecting young people from tobacco industry manipulation, including digital marketing and flavored products

2023

Campaign emphasized “We need food, not tobacco,” encouraging crop diversification and reducing dependence on tobacco farming

2025–2026

Focus shifted towards technology-driven tobacco control, including digital monitoring systems, school-based enforcement tools and youth-centric prevention programs
