Horticulture, a key contributor to Himachal Pradesh’s economy, is witnessing rapid growth with the State Government’s focus on modern farming practices, infrastructure development and farmer-centric initiatives.
Under the HP SHIVA Project, around 4,000 hectares of land is being brought under high-density orchards, benefiting nearly 3,500 farmers and orchardists. The project aims to promote commercial horticulture, increase productivity and enhance farmers’ incomes.
Over the past three years, the Department of Horticulture has expanded diversification efforts by bringing nearly 870 hectares under orchards, hybrid vegetables and spice cultivation through the Integrated Horticulture Development Mission. Seven demonstration plots have also been established for high-value crops including avocado, blueberry and dragon fruit.
Protected cultivation has received a major boost, with nearly 1.89 lakh square metres of polyhouse area developed through an investment of about Rs. 16 crore, benefiting around 900 farmers. The initiative has enabled year-round cultivation of high-value vegetables and flowers.
To protect orchards from weather-related losses, nearly 1,000 hectares have been covered under anti-hail nets, with financial assistance of around Rs. 44 crore extended to 6,454 farmers. Additionally, 12,739 farmers have received support for farm machinery such as power tillers and sprayers through an investment of nearly Rs. 39 crore.
The State has also strengthened post-harvest infrastructure, with private investment supporting the establishment of cold rooms, storage facilities, grading lines and food processing units. These initiatives are helping reduce losses and improve market access for horticulture produce.
Under the “Per Drop, More Crop” scheme, nearly 2,000 hectares have been brought under micro-irrigation systems, benefiting 2,185 farmers and promoting efficient water use.
With continued investment in technology, infrastructure and sustainable practices, Himachal Pradesh’s horticulture sector is moving towards greater productivity, profitability and long-term growth for farmers and orchardists.
