In a major boost to India’s long-term sporting ambitions, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has issued operational guidelines for the revised Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations (NSFs). Approved with a total outlay of ₹7,386.74 crore for the 2026–27 to 2030–31 period under the 16th Finance Commission cycle, the enhanced framework serves as the primary engine for training Indian athletes for the Olympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Paralympic Games, and World Championships.
The revised scheme introduces strategic, forward-looking components aligned with India’s bid for the 2036 Olympic Games and preparations for CWG 2030. Key highlights include substantial financial upgrades, such as providing up to ₹50 crore to NSFs for hosting major international tournaments in India, as well as up to ₹50 crore to support the technical conduct, scoring systems, and modern equipment required for the National Games.
To lower dependency on overseas training camps, India plans to build dedicated Olympic Training Centres (OTCs) equipped with cutting-edge sports science technology and specialized high-performance staff for individual sports. Furthermore, the scheme expands India’s global footprint by offering targeted funding to promote indigenous sports in international competitions, providing sports scholarships and training access to Global South partner nations, and supporting sports competitions and research initiatives for multilateral bodies like BRICS and BIMSTEC.
