World Food Day is an annual global event observed on October 16 to mark the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1945 and to unite action against global hunger, malnutrition, and food insecurity. Commemorated across more than 150 countries, the observance serves as a vital platform to raise awareness about the paradox of worldwide food production, where enough food is grown to feed the global population, yet hundreds of millions suffer from poverty, supply chain breakdowns, and unequal distribution. By bringing together governments, international organizations, farmers, and civil society, the day emphasizes the urgent need to build sustainable, climate-resilient agri-food systems, reduce post-harvest losses, and ensure that every individual has universal, affordable access to safe and nutritious food in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger.
