In a decisive move toward a healthier future, the Himachal Pradesh Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has approved the Himachal Pradesh Nutrition Policy 2026. This comprehensive policy is designed to combat malnutrition, anaemia, micronutrient deficiencies, and emerging diet-related lifestyle diseases across the state. At its core, the policy celebrates traditional Himachali superfoods—such as local millets, indigenous pulses, seasonal fruits, green leafy vegetables, and fresh dairy products—to encourage culturally rooted, balanced, and healthy eating habits.

Adopting a holistic life-cycle approach to public health, the initiative places special emphasis on the critical first 1,000 days of a child’s life, maternal wellness, adolescent nutrition, and vulnerable communities. To bridge geographical disparities, special focus will be directed toward remote and tribal areas, ensuring that every citizen has equitable access to safe, wholesome, and affordable food alongside quality healthcare services.

To guarantee seamless execution across all levels of governance, the policy brings together multiple key departments, including Health, Education, Agriculture, Horticulture, Women and Child Development, and Rural Development. This collaborative effort will be driven by the newly proposed State Nutrition Coordination Cell (SNCC) and District Nutrition Coordination Cells (DNCCs). Furthermore, existing grassroots welfare frameworks such as Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), PM POSHAN, and the Public Distribution System (PDS) will be strengthened through community participation and active behavior-change campaigns.

Parallel to dietary advocacy, the government is executing a major overhaul of the state’s food safety and testing infrastructure to eliminate adulteration and ensure compliance with nutritional standards. This includes upgrading the Composite Testing Laboratory at Kandaghat, establishing four new laboratories statewide—with setup already underway in Dharamshala—and deploying mobile food testing facilities. Backed by real-time data integration through a proposed State Nutrition Portal, the administration aims to enable evidence-based monitoring and swift corrective action, ensuring a well-nourished and empowered future for Himachal Pradesh.
