Championing a transformative shift from a linear “take-make-waste” model to a sustainable future, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, addressed the CII Circular Economy Conference in New Delhi today. The Minister underscored that India is actively translating its policy vision into tangible ground reality through robust regulations, digital compliance networks, and a unified government push.
Addressing key milestones under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Shri Yadav highlighted India’s comprehensive legal frameworks covering nine distinct waste streams—including plastic, e-waste, batteries, end-of-life vehicles, and construction debris. To date, regulatory frameworks have driven the processing of nearly 500 lakh metric tonnes of waste, backed by over 86,000 producers and nearly 4,900 recyclers registered on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) digital platforms.
The Minister urged close collaboration between the government, private sector, and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to build financial sustainability and scale recycling technologies. Emphasizing that law alone cannot solve resource depletion, he called for widespread adoption of the Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) movement, encouraging mindful consumption alongside critical mineral recovery from e-waste and four-stream solid waste segregation across Indian cities.
