End Violence Against Women: One Billion Rising Revolution 2016

YWCA.11.3.16aYWCA of Simla organised a program here today at the Central Jail in Kanda as part of ‘One Billion Rising’ campaign on the theme ‘Keep Bringing in the Most Marginalised’ to awaken people to end violence against women.

During the occasion a nukkad natak titled ‘Ye Bhi Hinsa Hai’ was presented as the One Billion Rising launched its fourth campaign. The play was directed by Narender Verma and was performed by students for gender sensitization of prisoners in the Central Jail at Kanda calling for an end to violence and injustice against women and girls. Raju, Mahen, Pooja, Karishma, Latika, Bhanu, Palav, Karma, Danish, Lucky, Anuj, Vikas and Narender participated in the nukkad natak.

YWCA.11.3.16This was followed by a talk on ‘Gender-based Violence’ by Rohini Singh, General Secretary of YWCA of Simla. She focussed on how the campaign is about envisioning justice and respect for all. The program was witnessed by the prisoners and staff of Kanda Jail. Sweets were also distributed among them as part of Women’s Day celebrations by YWCA of Simla.

After the programme, the participants also learned about the Jail Industries at Model Central Jail Kanda (Shimla) which aims to train the prisoners in few trades such as weaving, knitting, etc., so that after their release from the prison they may be able to rehabilitate themselves.

Ms Singh further informed that a talk on female health care was also held. Imprisoned women have more and different health-care needs compared to male prisoners, often related to reproductive health issues, and as suchDr. Priyanka, Simla Sanitarium & Hospital, spoke to the women in prison focussing on important female health issues.
