The third day of the Rev. Dr. Samuel Slater Inter-School Debates began with early morning quarter finals between the top 8 teams from Vivek High School, Chandigarh, La Martiniere Girls, Kolkata, Modern High School, Kolkata, St. James, Kolkata, Convent of Jesus and Mary, Shimla, The Doon School, Dehradun and Bishop Cotton School, Shimla. The competition’s third evening had the top four schools La Martiniere Girls, Kolkata, St. James, Kolkata, Convent of Jesus and Mary, Shimla and Bishop Cotton School, Shimla, competing in the semi-finals after nerve racking quarter finals. The first debate for the day was the quarter final round-1 held between the teams from The Doon School, Dehradun and Bishop Cotton School, Shimla.
The undoubtedly intense debate pertained to the topic “Fat tax should be imposed on fast food” which was proposed by the Doon School but strongly opposed by the Cottonians. The proposing team presented its arguments on how imposing a Fat Tax would help handle the rising rates of obesity and other cardio vascular diseases while strongly opposing this, bishop cotton’s team presented statistics on how hike in prices of a commodity does not affect its consumption rate. The debate was a very close one though won by Bishop Cotton School. The day witnessed a total of eight quarter final rounds and two extremely intense semi-final rounds, giving the two finalists of the 25th edition of the Revd. Dr. Samuel Slater Memorial Debates.
