UIDAI and IIT Bombay have announced a collaboration to develop a touchless biometric capture system that will make it easier for people to authenticate their identity from anywhere, at any time. This joint initiative will involve the development of a mobile capture system for fingerprints, incorporating a liveness model, to capture multiple fingerprints at once and increase the success rate of authentication.

The proposed system will use a combination of signal and image processing, as well as machine learning and deep learning, to provide a user-friendly experience through a common mobile phone. This technology will be a significant step forward in realizing a universal authenticator.

The collaboration between UIDAI and IIT Bombay will take place through the National Centre of Excellence in Technology for Internal Security (NCETIS), a joint initiative between IIT Bombay and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The NCETIS aims to develop indigenous technology solutions for Internal Security forces in areas such as Electronic System Design and Manufacturing.
