The prestigious Slater Debates, hosted by Bishop Cotton School (BCS), Shimla, have always been a pivotal platform for students to hone their public speaking and debating skills. In his opening address at the chapel, Director Mr. Simon Weale emphasized the growing need for public speaking, stating that “debating is an integral part of our school calendar as it is an essential life skill.” This sets the stage for a series of intellectually stimulating debates as part of the XXVII Revd. Dr. Samuel Slater Memorial Invitational Inter-School English Debates.
Honoring the Legacy of Rev. Dr. Samuel Slater
The Slater Debates are held in memory of Rev. Dr. Samuel Slater, the first headmaster of BCS, who led the institution from 1863 to 1885. This annual event fosters a tradition of intellectual growth, critical thinking, and public discourse among students. Last year’s winners, Mallinson Girls’ School, Srinagar, were commended for their resilience amidst the challenging backdrop of instability in Kashmir.
Ms. Syed Bareen Qadri, representing the former victors, shared her emotional connection to the event, stating: “Children in Kashmir were robbed of many opportunities, but we have always proved that it’s not about your past but how strong you come back.”
Day 1 Highlights – Engaging Debates and Intellectual Exchanges
The first debate of the day featured St. Thomas School going head-to-head with Tyndale Biscoe School, Srinagar, on the motion, “Make in India is a political tool to gain votes.” The opposition, led by Tyndale Biscoe, passionately argued that “development is not building dams or roads, but building the people.” Their compelling arguments saw them emerge victorious.
Another gripping debate followed between Yadvinder Public School and Wynberg Allen School, Mussoorie, on the motion, “The Indian school curriculum is far better for India than any foreign board.” Despite strong points from both sides, Wynberg Allen School claimed victory, arguing that many global influencers and leaders have thrived through India’s education system.
Looking Ahead – A Platform for Fierce Intellectual Battles
The Slater Debates continue to serve as a platform where young minds challenge conventional wisdom, exchange ideas, and build the foundation for future leaders. As Ms. Gupta from Shri Ram School, Moulsari, remarked, “The Slater Debates is a safe space for me to fight for my opinions without the bloodshed.”
With today’s strong performances, the stage is set for more thrilling debates tomorrow, as participants return with renewed vigor and determination.
