On 24th September, the Indian Army organized a ‘Greenathon’ programme at St. Thomas’ School, Shimla in collaboration with the Army Training Command (ARTRAC), Shimla. This eco-friendly initiative was part of the Territorial Army’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations and was spearheaded by the 118 Battalion Infantry Grenadier Regiment. The main aim of the event was to raise awareness about environmental conservation, promote tree plantation, and emphasize the importance of cleanliness among the students.
Colonel Navin Kumar of the Army Training Command, Shimla, participated as the chief guest of the event. In his address, Colonel Kumar inspired the students to actively contribute to environmental conservation efforts and protect nature for future generations.
Subedar A.P. Tripathi delivered an enlightening talk on the significance of nature and how tree plantation and cleanliness play crucial roles in preserving the environment. His words aimed to instill a sense of responsibility among students for safeguarding their surroundings.
As part of the event, teachers from St. Thomas School, Surendra Sharma and Salig Kumar, shared insights on the ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’ campaign, a nationwide initiative promoting cleanliness. They emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean and green environment and encouraged students to participate actively in community-driven initiatives.
To further promote the green cause, the Army Training Command distributed plants to all the students, urging them to take responsibility for protecting the environment. The students were also made aware of the harmful effects of plastic pollution and how reducing plastic usage can contribute to a healthier planet.
This year marks the centenary celebrations of St. Thomas School, adding a historic significance to the Greenathon. The collaboration between the Indian Army and the school in organizing this event underscores their shared commitment to environmental sustainability and civic responsibility.
