Bishop Cotton School (BCS), Shimla, marked its 165th anniversary in grand style with a vibrant Speech Day celebration held on the first flat of the school. The event commenced with a lively march past accompanied by the school band and a disciplined NCC parade. This was followed by the award ceremony at the historic Irwin Hall, where the achievements of students in academics and co-curricular activities were recognized.
Remembering Absent Friends: Tribute to Mr. DC Anand and Mrs. Sunita John
The occasion was also a poignant moment to remember two cherished members of the BCS community who passed away just the day before: Mr. DC Anand and Mrs. Sunita John. Mr. Anand, a legendary Old Cottonian (OC), was a successful alumni and the pioneering founder of a multi-billion-dollar industry. He was instrumental in establishing the Old Cottonians association as a thriving and influential body. Mrs. Sunita John, the former head of Auckland House for 26 years, was remembered for her compassionate leadership and her role as a formidable educator, shaping the lives of countless students over the years.
DGP Dr. Verma’s Inspiring Speech at Speech Day
The Guest of Honour, DGP Himachal Pradesh, Dr. Verma, was welcomed by the school to award prizes to the students. Dr. Verma emphasized the importance of character development and its pivotal role in ensuring success in later life. His speech inspired the students to focus not just on academic excellence but also on building strong, resilient character traits that would serve them well in the future.
Director Mr. Simon Weale’s Philosophy on Education
BCS Director, Mr. Simon Weale, also shared his thoughts on the educational approach at the school. He stated, “The carrot usually works much better than the stick. A smiling child achieves more than a scared one.” Mr. Weale highlighted the importance of developing internal discipline in students, which would help them navigate the challenges of life after school. He emphasized that BCS aims to provide students with a wide range of experiences that test their abilities and help them realize their true potential.
