Bhupender Gupta Appointed CMD of NHPC

Bhupender Gupta, currently Chairman and Managing Director of SJVN Limited, has officially assumed charge as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC Limited, a Schedule ‘A’ Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE).

Gupta brings with him over 34 years of rich experience, including 31 years dedicated to the power sector. Prior to this appointment, he was serving as Director (Technical) at THDC India Limited and concurrently held the additional charge of CMD at SJVN.

His illustrious career includes key leadership roles, such as Director (Technical) at the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority in Bhutan, and Additional CEO at REC subsidiaries—REC Transmission Projects Co. Ltd. and REC Power Distribution Co. Ltd. In these roles, he led major operations involving execution, project management, and consultancy for significant power infrastructure projects.

Earlier in his career, Gupta contributed immensely to SJVN, particularly in the planning and commissioning of the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station in Himachal Pradesh. He also worked on deputation at the 1020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Project between 2002 and 2005.

An electrical engineering graduate with an MBA in Operations Management, Bhupender Gupta is widely respected for his technical acumen and strategic leadership in the hydro and transmission sectors. As CMD of NHPC, he is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing India’s clean and sustainable energy goals.
