In a significant move to reform school education, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that Class X students will be allowed to take board exams twice a year starting from 2026. This change is in line with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes reducing the ‘high-stakes’ pressure of a single board examination. According to Para 4.37 of the policy, students will have the opportunity to appear in one main examination and one improvement examination within the same academic year if desired.
CBSE Announces Two Board Exams
The decision comes after extensive consultations with stakeholders and is aimed at creating a more flexible and student-friendly assessment system. By offering students a second chance to improve their performance, the initiative is expected to reduce exam-related stress and support continuous learning. The board believes this will help shift the focus from rote learning to conceptual understanding and holistic development.
CBSE will release detailed guidelines, examination schedules, and implementation modalities in the coming months. Schools, students, and parents are advised to stay updated through official announcements on the CBSE website at cbse.gov.in.
