In a major boost to Shimla’s urban mobility infrastructure, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri today announced that the Ropeway and Rapid Transport System Development Project has received Stage-I forest clearance under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC).
The ambitious project, estimated at ₹1734.70 crore, aims to construct a 13.79-kilometre-long ropeway connecting key locations across Shimla. It is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce carbon emissions, and promote sustainable, eco-friendly transport for both residents and tourists.
Agnihotri informed that the central government has given in-principle approval for the diversion of 6.1909 hectares of forest land, subject to full compliance with all environmental and legal norms. The project will also create local employment opportunities and offer a modern, scenic travel experience for visitors.
Calling it a significant gift for the people of Shimla, the Deputy CM emphasized that the ropeway would be a crucial step toward achieving the state’s ‘Green Himachal’ vision. He also expressed gratitude to the Centre and the MoEF&CC for their support.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to environmental conservation, he said that all construction work under the project would strictly adhere to forest department guidelines and ecological safeguards.
