St. Edward’s School, Shimla—an institution steeped in tradition and known for shaping generations of leaders—kicked off its centenary celebrations with a heartfelt and festive three-day event, bringing together alumni, students, educators, and dignitaries in a vibrant display of school spirit and heritage.

The celebrations began at the iconic Ridge Ground with the launch of an anti-drug awareness campaign titled Kill the Urge for Drugs through Yoga, symbolizing the school’s continued commitment to nurturing not just minds, but values and wellness.

Back on campus, the morning unfolded with a March Past featuring former and current Edwardians, setting the tone for an energetic day of sports competitions, including exhibition matches in cricket, football, and basketball. The Centenary Trophies were unveiled, honoring a legacy of sporting excellence and camaraderie built over a hundred years.

As the sun set, the school transformed into a space of reflection and cultural celebration. A ceremonial lighting of the lamp marked the beginning of the evening programme, followed by a mesmerizing sitar recital by alumnus Dr. Gagandeep Hothi, a disciple of Padma Bhushan Pt. Budhaditya Mukherjee. The performance stirred memories and pride among the attendees, many of whom had traveled from afar to reconnect with their roots.

In a tribute to the intellectual and creative legacy of the school, books authored by students and faculty were released during the event. “The 100-Year Tapestry, Volumes 1 and 2”, chronicling the school’s rich history, were unveiled by Bishop Ignatius Mascarenhas, adding a deeply symbolic layer to the celebration. The school also felicitated its CBSE Class XII toppers, honouring their achievements as a continuation of the school’s legacy of academic distinction.

A captivating art installation, showcasing the spirit, resilience, and values of St. Edward’s, concluded the day—serving as a visual reminder of the institution’s profound impact over the past century.

St. Edward’s School has been the cradle of some of India’s most distinguished personalities, including former Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, General Bipin Rawat, World Bank President Ajay Banga, and Justice Sanjay Karol of the Supreme Court. Today, it continues to uphold its vision of academic excellence, character building, and national service.

The centenary celebrations not only honoured a storied past but also set the stage for the school’s journey into the future—firmly rooted in values, and ever-evolving in vision.
