Addressing the 3rd Convocation Ceremony of Himachal Pradesh National Law University (NLU), Shimla, CM Sukhu stated that the true power of law lies in delivering justice to the weakest sections of society and ensuring that every citizen feels their constitutional rights are protected.
In his address, CM Sukhu underlined that justice in a vibrant democracy cannot be restricted solely to judicial verdicts; it must be guided by wisdom, compassion, and a deep understanding of practical circumstances. Reflecting on his own academic background in law from Himachal Pradesh University, he noted how legal education continues to enrich his public and political life. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to fortifying judicial infrastructure, while also pointing out the fiscal challenges faced by the state exchequer when court directions grant financial benefits beyond established recruitment rules.
Sharing the dais, Supreme Court Judge Justice M. M. Sundresh praised the scenic beauty of Himachal Pradesh and called upon the graduating cohort to view themselves as “social engineers, doctors, and architects.” Justice Sundresh emphasized that legal practice demands an unwavering sense of social responsibility. He advised young lawyers to continuously upgrade their skill sets to navigate emerging frontiers—particularly the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the legal ecosystem.
The event saw High Court of Himachal Pradesh Chief Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia confer degrees upon the graduating students, while CM Sukhu awarded gold medals to top academic achievers. Honoris Causa Doctor of Laws degrees were also bestowed upon former CJI Sanjiv Khanna, Tripura High Court Chief Justice M. S. Ramachandra Rao, and former Jharkhand High Court Chief Justice Trilok Singh Chauhan. NLU VC Dr. Preeti Saxena, alongside High Court judges and legal luminaries, attended the ceremony.
