Keekli Reporter, 2nd December, 2013, Shimla
The students of Government Girls Senior Secondary School Portmore celebrated their Annual Day and Prize Distribution function with great zeal, enthusiasm and passion, which was clearly reflected in each and every performance given by them. Honorable Chief Minister, Virbhadra Singh graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and took the Guard of Honor by the scouts and guides followed by a March Past by the students of Portmore School. He was then guided by Principal Nisha Bhaluni and Vice Principal, Dipshikha to the auditorium where he lighted the lamp following which the function began. Other dignitaries present were Mayor Sanjay Chauhan and former Deputy Mayor Harish Janartha.
The students sung Vande Mataram and a classical song to welcome the chief guest, which was then followed by the Annual Report read by the Principal Nisha Bhaluni. She briefly outlined the achievements of the school and especially students who had achieved great feats during the academic session. She also added that the school had a special section for visually impaired as well as hearing impaired students, who were actively participating in all the co-curricular activities as well as were a part of todays’ celebrations too (see video clip for school report).
The students then presented a Hindi song which was followed by a Kinnauri dance setting the tone for the afternoon filled with festive celebrations and merriment. Soon the stage was taken over by the girls performing a Chamba dance followed by a vibrant and energetic Punjabi Gidda Jaago Aayi Hai. Even those sitting in the audience couldn’t help but pick up few steps and join the revelry.
After this the girls sang a melodious English song I have a Dream, which was followed by the Judo Tai Commando demonstration with a brief narration explaining the terms of the combat art forms. The girls exhibited their skills of self-defense and how they were ready to take any opponent if need be. It was then the turn of girls with hearing impairment who skillfully danced on a Punjabi number and it was impossible to differentiate unless and until it was laid out in words.
The next item was a Qwalli number by the girls followed by an Aerobics dance display and the evening ended on a high note of a beautiful performance of Natti by the girls who led the Hon’ble Minister onto the stage who then joined them among loud cheers and claps from the students and all present in the audience. The most amazing aspect about all the performances was that all the songs and background score, vocal as well as instrumental was given by the students themselves. This definitely speaks volumes of the kind of education that is imparted by the teachers and the music department.
Hon’ble Minister expressed gratitude and appreciated the efforts of all the students for presenting such a beautiful event and lauded the hard work of all the teaching and support staff for taking the school to new heights and imparting such high standard of education to all the girls. In his address he also raised few issues concerning the school and instructed the concerned departments to install independent electricity meters within 15 days and look in to the matter on priority basis. He also announced and instructed the staff to prepare an estimate for fencing of the school on priority basis as a security measure and before the start of the next academic session the work should be completed.
The evening ended with the prize distribution and an announcement of a one day holiday.
