The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has taken a firm stance in safeguarding the state’s natural resources, power rights, and financial interests by aggressively pursuing major long-pending disputes in court. Reversing years of administrative inaction, the state government’s proactive legal strategy is already delivering landmark judgments, reclaiming prime properties, and securing hundreds of crores in additional annual revenue for the public exchequer.
Among the major victories is the resolution of the long-standing Wildflower Hall dispute. By presenting robust evidence in court, the state successfully ended litigation dating back to 2002 and reclaimed full control of the iconic property, which now generates over ₹20 crore annually for Himachal Pradesh following a ₹25 crore settlement payout. Additionally, a favorable Supreme Court decision in the Karcham-Wangtoo project dispute boosted the state’s free-power royalty share from 12% to 18%, bringing in roughly ₹150 crore in extra revenue every year.
The Chief Minister has also successfully turned the tables on the ₹15,000 crore Kishau Multipurpose Project. Rejecting a previous agreement that would have burdened Himachal Pradesh with an ₹800 crore share, Sukhu negotiated for the beneficiary states of Delhi, Rajasthan, and Haryana to cover the state’s ₹2,000 crore water-component cost. Once complete, the 422 MW project on the Tons River will grant Himachal Pradesh around 100 crore electricity units annually, valued at nearly ₹600 crore.
Beyond these wins, Himachal Pradesh continues its relentless push for a ₹4,200 crore payout and a rightful electricity share from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), along with its Supreme Court-backed 7.19% stake in Chandigarh’s assets. The government is also aggressively pursuing full operational control of the Shanan Hydroelectric Project following the expiration of Punjab’s lease. Through these high-stakes battles, Chief Minister Sukhu has made it clear that the state will never compromise on its legitimate rights and resources.
