After ushering in notable reforms in the education sector, the Himachal Pradesh Government, under the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has now turned its focus towards transforming the health sector through a series of progressive and far-reaching reforms.
With a vision to deliver world-class healthcare at people’s doorsteps, the state government has initiated structural changes, introduced advanced medical technologies, and approved large-scale recruitments to address longstanding gaps in public healthcare.
One of the most significant breakthroughs has been the introduction of robotic surgery at the Atal Institute of Medical Super-Specialty, Chamiyana (Shimla) and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda.
In the next phase, this state-of-the-art facility will be expanded to government medical colleges in Hamirpur, Chamba, Ner Chowk, and Nahan, making Himachal Pradesh one of the few states in the country to integrate robotic surgical technology in the public healthcare system.
Simultaneously, zonal, regional, and civil hospitals are undergoing technology upgrades to improve diagnostics, treatment, and patient care, ensuring uniform access to modern healthcare across urban and rural areas.
To enhance efficiency and streamline service delivery, the government has approved the bifurcation of the existing 3,020 Medical Officers into two distinct cadres:
-
Medical Officers (General):
-
2,337 posts
-
Entry qualification: MBBS
-
Will handle OPD/IPD and preventive healthcare
-
-
Medical Officers (Specialists):
-
683 posts
-
Entry qualification: MBBS with PG degree/diploma
-
Will focus on specialized clinical services
-
This landmark reform aligns the medical workforce with current health needs and prepares the system to face future challenges more effectively.
To further strengthen the healthcare ecosystem, the government has greenlit the recruitment of:
-
200 Medical Officers as Job Trainees
-
38 Assistant Professors in Super-Specialty Departments
-
400 Staff Nurses as Job Trainees in various state-run institutions
These appointments will improve the doctor-patient ratio, enhance teaching standards in medical colleges, and bolster healthcare delivery at all levels.
A government spokesperson stated that since taking office, the current administration has prioritized healthcare delivery, focusing on equipping hospitals with modern equipment, specialist doctors, skilled nurses, and paramedical staff. The aim is to reduce dependence on out-of-state medical institutions and ensure that quality, affordable, and specialized treatment is available within Himachal Pradesh.
These sweeping changes reflect the State Government’s unwavering commitment to improving healthcare access and outcomes for every citizen.
