CM Sukhu conducted an aerial survey of the disaster-affected areas in Chamba and Kangra districts today, assessing the extensive damage caused by torrential rains, landslides, and cloudbursts. The survey covered Bharmour, Manimahesh, and other affected regions in Chamba, as well as Fatehpur and Mand areas of Indora in Kangra, following the release of excess water from the Pong Dam.

Due to adverse weather conditions, the CM’s helicopter could not land in Bharmour, but he later addressed the media in Chamba. Speaking on the situation, the CM noted that while the state government’s proactive measures helped reduce the loss of life compared to last year, the scale of the damage was much greater. Roads, electricity, water supply, and communication services had been severely disrupted. He stated, “This year, the entire state has faced widespread destruction, and the challenge of rehabilitation remains daunting. However, with the people’s support, we will face it courageously.”

The CM emphasized the state’s commitment to helping those affected, particularly the families who have lost their homes and livelihoods. “A special relief package will be announced to support these families,” he said.

The CM also mentioned that Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania, Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, and Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh were on the ground, reviewing the situation. He highlighted the importance of a humanitarian approach, with Revenue Minister Negi walking from Chamba to Bharmour to oversee the relief efforts.

The state government is focused on restoring road connectivity, with heavy machinery deployed to clear blocked routes. Despite challenges posed by the weather, evacuation efforts for those stranded in Bharmour are underway, with helicopters providing essential support.

Criticizing the opposition BJP, the CM stated, “Instead of helping the affected people, BJP leaders are busy spreading rumors. They demanded the adjournment of the Vidhan Sabha session, yet last year they called for an extension. Their petty politics are unfortunate, especially when we need unity in such times.”

He further stressed the importance of studying the frequent cloudbursts in the state and asked the Union Government to form an expert group to address the issue. The CM linked the frequent disasters to global warming and climate change, stressing that the state must take effective steps to mitigate these threats.

Earlier, during his visit to Kalsuin, the CM ensured that buses were arranged for stranded devotees and directed officials to restore vital roads like Salooni-Khundimaral to assist pilgrims from Jammu and Kashmir.

The CM also held a meeting with the district administration at NHPC Bhawan, Karian, where he directed them to expedite relief operations, including the restoration of essential services like water, food, and shelter. He further instructed the restoration of critical roads and electrical systems to assist the affected populations.

Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh, MLAs Neeraj Nayyar and Suresh Kumar, and other district officials were also present during the visit
