Cottonians show Great Sportsmanship despite Washout

Bishop Cotton School celebrated its Annual Sports Day on 28th September, 2013 as the special guests for the occasion were the old Cottonians of 1963 batch, who were warmly greeted by the Headmaster, Christopher Robinson. The guests were then escorted by the Headmaster to the field who unfurled the flag, then released pigeons and balloons into the air, which was followed by the traditional lighting of the flame by the Athletics Captain who then led the impressive March Past and the oath taking ceremony. Then the school song was sung by the students.

After the March Past, the guests addressed the students wherein they briefly outlined the value of sports and games in a student’s life and possibilities of career options in this field. The guided the students about the importance of games and sports as they taught discipline and children also develop the spirit of the sportsmanship as well as derive a lot of pleasure by playing games. It also inculcates the quality of team spirit in them. The students learn the qualities of leadership and working in union. After the speech the meet was declared open.

The students who excelled in the vents were rewarded with prizes by the guests. Since the school was closing for the Autumn Break, parents too were invited to attend the sports day.

The track events began with the 100 meters race in different divisions. But unfortunately the weather gave way and it was soon pouring heavily. Hence, only results were declared for few events and the Sports Day was postponed for a future date.

Victory stands are beautifully done up to make the victors feel proud of being there after the events. The crowning glory of the day was the display item that ensured a well coordinated and synchronized mass participation, with a colourful display of ball exercises.

Today a school without games and sports is unthinkable, as sports and games have become an integral element of present-day education. Today education is an all-round development of the child. In this respect games and sports play a significant role. It is in this backdrop that most schools organise their Annual Sports Day.
