Creative-Craft Excellence displayed in all Subjects: Chapslee School Bharari

Keekli Reporter, 14th September, 2013, Shimla

A “School Exhibition” as the Principal of the school, Pronati Singh preferred to call it, was an eye opener event and clearly showcased the hard work and diligence with which the children has presented all their concepts. The routine stuff was missing and one was greeted with some great innovative designs and models based on various subject streams — Science, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Music, Commerce, Art and Craft, Sports and of course Computers. An exhibition based on different subjects, with wholehearted participation by each and every student, hence rightly called the “School Exhibition” and not just a crafts exhibition.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Anita Khanna, a former educationist and teacher at British School and the Air Force School, New Delhi, was all ears to what the children had to say about their projects. While having an interactive section with the children, questioning them time and again, she said, “I am delighted to see the hard work put in by all the children and the use of creativity for learning various subjects. We should use knowledge for constructive means and not for destructive use as that is how we can create a better world”.

As one walked into each classroom, one could see the students standing across their tables, eagerly awaiting their turn to explain the models, diagrams, charts and concepts created by them. The Science Room had exhibits on Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Anuridhi Kaushal and Komal Preet, Class 10, can be seen explaining the concept of division of cells (see video clip).

The Mathematics room was all about numbers, geometry, bars, graphs, and numeric codes. Neelanchal Joshi, Class 9 and Akshay Sood, Class 12 gave a power point presentation about the history of mathematics and use of numbers in our everyday lives (see video clip).

In Social Sciences one was enlightened about the geographical aspects, fundamental rights and historical facts. Kritika Chauhan and Sonam Negi, Class 9 can be seen explaining the fundamental rights of an individual (see video clip). The Commerce section was all about partnership and proprietorship, while a room was also dedicated to Music and Ragas.

The Sports section highlighted the importance of our national game Hockey and its doyen, Dhyanchand. Aarush Dev and Nikhil Thakur, Class 12, explained the history of Hockey, the two types of fields used today, rules and regulations and about the great Indian Hockey player, Dhyanchand (see video clip). The Arts and Craft room was all about embroidery, sketches, painting — paper as well as fabric — and bead work.

Computer exhibit was an elaborate affair on technology and how fast-paced our lives have become due to the every-second changing technological advances. Anshuman Suyal and Manuj Kumar, 12th Class, explained the concept of cloud computing and what their counter parts thought about it and how they used it in their lives through a projector presentation (see video clip).

Principal, Pronati Singh highly praised and appreciated the efforts put in by all the students and staff members in organizing and presenting such a marvelous show of exhibits. She said, “It takes almost a year’s preparation to put up such a show. We begin planning at the onset of the school session and now after its completion today, we will start planning for next year well in advance. However, there are no awards or rewards for any one child as we see them working so hard that it becomes difficult to judge them on any one parameter. Commendations all around for making this day a grand success!!!”

However, Principal Singh sounded disappointed when we inquired about parents’ response towards children activities. She said, “Since parents — especially dads — are least active participants, we have coincided our exhibit with the PTM, simply so that parents too become aware of the kind of activities and hard work their children have put in. We have noticed that events held in the Chapslee School Junior wing in Lakkar Bazar receive full attendance while parents hardly come to see their wards perform in any function in the Senior wing at Bharari. This not only disheartens the children but as educator and teachers we too feel disappointed. It is my earnest request that parents should play a more proactive role in their children’s lives.”

Catch few glimpses of how education can be fun, bring the text out of the books and see how your children created 2-, 3-dimensional models hence making learning a fun-filled, thrilling, enjoyable experience!
