Disaster-Affected Road Restoration Boosted By Chief Minister's Visit
Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s three-day visit has resulted in speeding up of restoration efforts for disaster-affected roads in the apple belt and other areas of Shimla district. The recently concluded visit has bolstered the spirit of Public Works Department (PWD) and Rural Development & Panchayati Raj Department to work round-the-clock for swiftly opening the closed roads or providing temporary alternatives to ensure an unimpeded transportation of apple produce to markets.

An additional allocation of approximately Rs. 11 crore has been made to both the departments during the visit. During his on-ground assessment of the affected areas, Sukhu empathized with affected families and affirmed an unwavering support from the state government. Despite resource constraints, the government is actively engaged in restoring link roads to enable the smooth transportation of apples. The Chief Minister stated, “The calamity in upper Shimla has caused substantial road damage.

After examining the situation for three days, and interacting with the affected, I have directed the officials to expedite restoration efforts. Our primary focus is to ensure that apples and other cash crops reach the market on time, alleviating financial burdens on the hardworking orchardists. The State Government remains steadfast in its support during these challenging times.” “With the goal of revitalizing transportation networks before the peak apple season, the Chief Minister directed the prompt opening of panchayat level roads by 15th August.

The government has already disbursed Rs. 110 crore to the PWD for road repairs across the apple growing belts,” he added. In accordance to the Chief Minister’s directive, approximately 250 JCBs and heavy machineries from the PWD have been deployed on the field. Adhering to the set priorities, both the PWD and RD Department are working tirelessly to restore panchayat level roads within the stipulated time frame. “The government is unwavering in its commitment to ensure the seamless flow of traffic and the preservation of crucial apple crops. The State Government’s dedication to relief and rescue operations is astute, ensuring no shortage of funds in this critical endeavor,” the Chief Minister reiterated.
