The week-long International Kullu Dussehra Festival began on a vibrant note as Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla inaugurated the first cultural evening at the Lal Chand Prarthi Kala Kendra in Kullu on Thursday. Lady Governor Janaki Shukla also graced the occasion.
In his address, the Governor emphasized the importance of promoting local Himachali artists, whose talent, he said, matches national standards. “Platforms like these should prioritize our local performers, not only to recognize their potential but also to preserve Himachal’s rich cultural heritage,” Shukla remarked.
Reflecting on his personal connection with the event, the Governor shared that for the past three years, he has had the honour of witnessing the Rath Yatra of Lord Raghunath Ji, describing it as a “divine experience” and a symbol of unity and devotion. “The thousands of youth pulling the sacred Rath are the real custodians of our culture,” he said, adding that such traditions should transcend festival boundaries and be passed on to future generations.
Shukla also highlighted Himachal Pradesh’s identity as the “Land of the Gods”, where more than 300 deities from across the Kullu Valley assemble annually, making the festival one-of-its-kind globally.
Addressing Disaster Impact and Rehabilitation Efforts
Turning to the recent natural calamities in the state, the Governor expressed grief over the devastating losses suffered by many families. He informed that discussions are underway with the Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change regarding land allotment for the rehabilitation of affected families.
He also mentioned that PM Modi was apprised of the situation during his visit to Dharamshala and appreciated the resilience of the people and the relief efforts led by the Red Cross Society.
Call for a Drug-Free Himachal
Reiterating his resolve to build a drug-free Himachal, the Governor urged citizens to take a collective stand against substance abuse. “If we truly want to save Himachal, we must eradicate drugs. With the blessings of Lord Raghunath Ji, we can build a healthier, prosperous society,” he said.
Support from Local Leadership and Community
Sunder Singh Thakur, Chairman of the International Kullu Dussehra Committee and local MLA, honoured the Governor and praised the district administration and community members for organizing the festival despite recent adversities. He highlighted the global fame of Kullu’s Dev culture and encouraged youth to turn to sports as a way to stay away from drugs.
He also announced that an employment fair will be held in Kullu district on October 15, aimed at expanding job opportunities for local youth.
Deputy Commissioner Torul S. Raveesh shared details of the upcoming cultural evenings, adding that in light of recent disasters, this year’s celebrations are being observed in a simplified manner, with local artists taking centre stage.
