Keekli Reporter, 2nd October, 2014, New Shimla, Shimla

Bubbly, full of energy and excitement, the little ones from Orchid Prep School, New Shimla, presented the epic tale of Ramayana in a very engaging manner here today at the Rotary Town Hall, Shimla. Dressed in various characters, the tiny tots took the audience on a religious journey with their cute depictions. School Principal Neelam Vij informed that we are a school with a difference as children are taught new things by enacting and narrating stories. “When children role play stories and learn new thing while enjoying and having fun, they are more receptive to remembering the same for a longer period of time. In our school we try and create an interactive atmosphere so that children understand and learn easily”, Principal Vij said. She further added that learning about our cultural values and festivals by being a part of them helps children inculcate these values.

There after what followed next was sheer treat for the parents and distinguished members of the Inner Wheel Club. The characters portrayed by the kids were — Arnav as Lord Shiv; Naveet Karan as King Dashrath; Roheen as Kaushaliya; Anvi as Sumitra; Adheera Sharma as Kakayi; special children Satvik, Moksh and Arnav as Mantris; Ayushi as Manthra; Ananya Bisht as Sita; Shashwat as Laxman; special kid Kashish as Shrupnakha; Shradha Kaushal as Ravan; Ayush as Jatayu; Hitesh as Ravan (Sadhu); Ansh as Hanuman; Nilaax as Sureev; Aarav as Bali; Anya, Aradhya and Naveen as Varnar Sena and Moksh and Arnav as Ravan Sena. With some help from the teachers and Ramayana narration by their class teacher Anjuri Thakur, the kids followed every word said. The innocent performances and dialogues delivered were sweetly admired and appreciated by all the proud parents. Special school teachers Tina and Sheela and make up and costume in-charge Sunita Katoch and Karuna did a great job with the kids. The next item was a thrilling performance by the girls doing the dandiya dance, thus receiving a huge applause from all present.

The highlight of the event was the story narration by Rohini Vij, daughter of the school principal who made a special appearance to entertain the audience as well as to guide them towards new concept of storytelling. The dialogue delivery, actions and the tone was captivating as there was pin drop silence while she ventured into the story. When children are taught new things by making them interesting rather than following a monotonous routine, they will definitely retain the same for much longer periods rather than it being a short term memory gain. She further suggested that such storytelling should be adopted in all walks of life and parents should especially use them while teaching their kids.
