Just as the momentum for the Slater Debates 2025 at Bishop Cotton School, Shimla reached its peak, an unforeseen turn of events has forced the prestigious inter-school competition to come to a sudden halt. Due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan, the final and most awaited stage of the debates has been cancelled in the interest of participant safety.
Despite a few teams expressing their willingness to continue, the collective decision to pause the event was taken after assessing the safety risks involved. The school administration, along with event organizers and faculty, placed the well-being of students, mentors, and staff above all else.
“We must prioritize peace, safety, and the protection of our young debaters above competitive spirit,” said one of the event coordinators.
Over the past few days, the Pre-Quarter and Quarter Final rounds had showcased intense intellectual battles on topics like:
- AI and Human Intelligence
- Mental Health Trends
- Fast Food Bans in Schools
- Armed Security in Educational Institutions
Participants from top schools including Cathedral and John Connon, La Martiniere Boys & Girls, GEMS Dubai, BCS Light & Dark Blue teams, Vivek High, and Auckland House had performed with excellence and conviction. A cybersecurity seminar and cultural exchanges had also enriched the experience.
While an official winner could not be declared, every team left their mark through critical thinking, articulate speech, and competitive spirit.
As we await a possible resolution and future announcement regarding a concluding round or winner, we extend our best wishes to all teams for a safe return home.
