The District Youth Service and Sports Department, Shimla, organized a fun filled sporting day for special children from various institutes in Shimla at the Dhalli Dumb and Deaf School here today. Members from the department, Nirmala Chauhan, Sunita Sharma and Dr Ravindra Mashtu were present to oversee the event and informed that few selected winners from today’s competition will participate at the state level competition which will be held in Kullu on 2nd December, 2014 to mark the World Disability Day. They also informed that students from Arushi School of Hope and Udaan, both from New Shimla participated in various sports events. Dr Shamsher Rathore, Physical Education Dept, HPU presided over the event for its smooth progress.

dhalli1School Principal of the Dumb and Deaf School, Dhalli, Vinay Kumari said, “It is important that we plan such events for our special children as they feel a part of our society when they are actively involved in routine events. Another thing people should realize that these children don’t need materialistic things instead people need to spend quality time with children here. Methods should be adopted to create avenues to involve differently-abled children in our society”. She further added that there were 28 visually impaired and 95 hearing impaired kids in the school at present who would be participating in various events today.

What followed next was quite amazing and astonishing, as the kids gathered around their physical education teachers — Vijendar Singh, Ramesh Bhusheri and Deepram Sharma, understanding the sign language and taking their positions. The events lined up for the day were 100 meter walk and skipping for visually impaired (VI) kids in the age group 13-17 years; 100 meters race and broad jump for hearing impaired (HI) kids; 50 meters assisted walk and softball throw; 100 meters and bocci for mentally challenged kids; while 100 meters race for disabled girls and boys in the age group of 18-45 years flat. The kids participated in the event with great passion and enthusiasm to finish the race and looked forward to their victory medals.

Students from Udaan School — Anmol, Priyanka, Shivani Rana, Ritvika, Shivani sharma, Diksha, Niru, Sahil Grover, Madan, Sagar, Akshit, and Bhanu — were accompanied with their teachers Krishna and Rukmani, while students from Aushi School of Hope — Pratul, Saatvik, Kashish, Arnav, Nitin, Divyagyan, Hitesh and Moksh — were accompanied with their teachers Tina and Shiela.

The most commendable part is that lots of hard work goes into training normal kids but complete dedication, love, commitment, compassion and tenderness coupled with loads of patience and tolerance is required in helping special children. Speech Therapist Dinesh Sharma also pointed out that most of the kids here 99 per cent hearing impaired so working on their speech and oratory skills is quite challenging. Each child needs individual attention and care unlike a mass class attendance.
