Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. (Col.) Dhani Ram Shandil, in a press statement issued on 31st October 2025, responded to allegations by BJP Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan regarding the JICA-funded health project. Dr. Shandil clarified that the project is being supported through a loan undertaken by the State Government, not a grant from the Central Government as claimed by the BJP MP. He accused Mahajan of misleading the public and attempting to take false credit for the State Government’s initiatives.
Dr. Shandil explained that the State Government had prepared a comprehensive blueprint for strengthening the health sector nearly two years ago, with funding arrangements through JICA finalized at that time. The project aims to provide better healthcare facilities to people under the leadership of CM Sukhu.
Highlighting the government’s ongoing investments, the Health Minister announced that Rs. 3,000 crore would be allocated in the coming years to enhance medical colleges, regional hospitals, and other health institutions across Himachal Pradesh. He also noted that robotic surgery facilities have been introduced at Chamiyana Super Specialities Hospital and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, allowing residents to access advanced treatment within the state.
Dr. Shandil criticized Mahajan for claiming credit despite being unaware of the project details. He added that under the previous BJP-led “Double Engine Sarkaar,” major hospitals operated with outdated equipment, with some machines over 20 years old, forcing patients to seek treatment outside the state. The former government’s neglect of the health sector, he said, contrasts sharply with the current administration’s initiatives to make healthcare affordable, accessible, and high-quality.
He concluded by emphasizing that the transformation in Himachal Pradesh’s health sector is the result of the State Government’s firm resolve and dedicated efforts under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhu.
