The season’s first major spell of snowfall blanketed Shimla and its surrounding areas on January 23, 2026, turning the region into a scenic winter wonderland while disrupting normal life, particularly along key routes such as the Dhalli–Kufri road.
Heavy snow accumulation on the Kufri road led to slippery conditions and severe traffic disruptions, leaving several public buses and private vehicles stranded. While the snowfall brought cheer to tourists and locals alike, it also caused congestion and posed challenges in the upper reaches of the district.
Responding swiftly, the 133 Eco Task Force played a vital role in rescue and relief operations in close coordination with the civil administration. The team assisted stranded commuters by distributing food to those stuck in vehicles and provided temporary shelter to a few affected individuals to ensure their safety during the harsh weather.
Senior officials, including Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Shimla Rural) Manjeet Sharma and Station House Officer Dhalli Virochan Negi, visited the site to review the situation and strengthen coordination with the Eco Task Force for effective emergency management.
The joint effort underscored the importance of preparedness and inter-agency coordination in handling winter emergencies in Himachal Pradesh’s hilly terrain. Authorities have advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution on snow-bound roads until conditions improve.
As the snowfall marked the end of a prolonged dry spell and added to the region’s winter charm, timely interventions by the administration helped ensure public safety while supporting the region’s tourism activity.
