Schools and Colleges in state to remain closed till 7th September: Education Minister
Education Minister Rohit Thakur chaired a high-level review meeting today with senior officials of the Higher and School Education Departments to assess the impact of the ongoing heavy rainfall across Himachal Pradesh.
He stated that persistent heavy to very heavy rainfall has caused widespread disruptions, including landslides, uprooting of trees, road blockages, and significant damage to public infrastructure. Educational institutions have not been spared, with nearly 743 schools and colleges affected and damages estimated at approximately Rs. 50 crore.
In light of the current inclement weather and to ensure the safety of students and staff, the Minister announced that all Government and Private Schools and Colleges, including DIETs, will remain closed till 7th September 2025. Teachers and administrative staff are also exempted from attending during this period. However, Heads of Institutions have been asked to conduct online classes where feasible and to ensure the protection of school property and records.
The Minister instructed officials to prioritize the use of Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) funds for institutions that have suffered over 75% damage. He emphasized the need for regular physical inspections to maintain transparency and ensure quality in repair and restoration work.
During the meeting, the Minister also reviewed preparations for Teacher’s Day celebrations on 5th September, where meritorious educators will be honoured for their contributions to quality education.
Plans for the upcoming International Literacy Day on 8th September 2025 were also discussed. The day is expected to mark a historic milestone, as Himachal Pradesh will be officially declared a fully literate state. Minister Thakur attributed this achievement to the government’s commitment to education, the efforts of teachers, and the active involvement of communities. He added that if weather conditions remain unfavourable, the celebrations may be held symbolically.
The review meeting also covered several key agenda items:
-
Promotion matters of School and College cadres
