Himachal Pradesh is rapidly emerging as a model state in healthcare modernization, delivering accessible, technology-driven medical services even in its remotest corners. Under the leadership of CM Sukhu, the state government has launched a comprehensive and visionary healthcare transformation, backed by policy reforms, infrastructure upgrades, and targeted outreach.
In just two and a half years, from January 2023 to December 2024, over 3.27 crore OPD and 37.5 lakh IPD patients received quality health services through a network of 2,926 government health institutions. These include six medical colleges, three zonal hospitals, nine regional hospitals, 92 civil hospitals, and thousands of PHCs and sub-centers.
Recognizing that true development lies in the strength of health and education systems, the Himachal government has prioritized modernization through digital integration, infrastructure expansion, and recruitment. Key upgrades include the expansion of Civil Hospital Kaza from 20 to 50 beds and civil hospitals in Sujanpur, Sunni, and Haroli from 50 to 100 beds. New health facilities have also been introduced in Sirmaur, Solan, Kangra, and Una districts.
To ensure equitable access, the government is setting up 69 model health institutions—one in each Assembly constituency (two in Lahaul-Spiti)—with 134 diagnostic tests, six specialized doctors, digital X-ray, ultrasound, and provision for MRI and CT scan facilities. Many of these are already operational, while the rest are under fast-track development.
As part of this push, 491 new health posts have been created across categories like medical officers, ward sisters, lab techs, pharmacists, OT assistants, and physiotherapists. Additionally, Rs. 1,730 crore has been allocated for modern medical equipment in the 2025–26 budget. Dialysis units are being established in all model institutions, and blood storage units are planned in 11 centers.
To support aging populations, the Mukhyamantri Vridhjan Dekhbhal Yojana will provide doorstep healthcare to senior citizens aged 70 and above.
Advanced diagnostic capabilities, such as MRI and PET scan facilities at IGMC Shimla, AIIMS Chamiyana, and medical colleges in Hamirpur and Nerchowk, are nearing completion—signaling the state’s aim to become a hub for world-class healthcare and medical tourism.
Through bold policies, ground-level action, and visionary leadership, Himachal Pradesh is not only transforming its health sector but also setting an example for other states and nations to follow.
