The Himachal Pradesh Government has proposed increasing postgraduate (PG) medical seats in government medical colleges from 277 to 597, marking the largest single-phase expansion of PG seats in the State. The move aims to enhance specialist medical education, address the shortage of specialist doctors and strengthen healthcare services.
Under the proposal, PG seats at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla will rise from 139 to 230, Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda from 99 to 156, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College, Mandi from 24 to 79, Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar Government Medical College, Nahan from 3 to 35, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru Government Medical College, Chamba from 4 to 32 and Dr. Radhakrishnan Government Medical College, Hamirpur from 8 to 65.
To support the expansion, the State Government has created 218 posts of Senior Residents and Tutor Specialists in the last three years, including 63 posts in Hamirpur, 54 in Tanda, 36 in Mandi, 32 in Chamba, 31 in Nahan and two in the Atal Institute of Medical Super Speciality, Chamiyana.
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the expansion would create more opportunities for doctors to pursue postgraduate education within the State, strengthen specialist healthcare services and improve patient care. He added that the government is upgrading medical colleges with modern infrastructure, advanced diagnostic facilities and better teaching resources to build a skilled medical workforce and reduce the need for patients to seek specialised treatment outside Himachal Pradesh.
