Himachal Pradesh has achieved a significant milestone in road safety, with a 6.48% reduction in road accidents and a notable decline in fatalities during 2024. The figures, released by the State Government, highlight the impact of its concerted efforts in traffic management and safety.

In 2024, the state reported 2107 road accidents, a drop from 2253 accidents recorded in 2023. Fatalities also decreased from 892 in 2023 to 806 in 2024, while the number of injuries declined from 3449 to 3290 during the same period.

Government Initiatives Yield Results

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu attributed the decline to the collective efforts of the Government, law enforcement agencies, and citizens.
“The reduction in road accidents and fatalities underscores our commitment to saving lives through targeted measures,” he said.

Over the past two years, the State Government has launched several initiatives, including:

  • Awareness Campaigns: Programs to encourage responsible driving behavior.
  • Improved Infrastructure: Road upgrades and safety enhancements in accident-prone areas.
  • Stronger Traffic Law Enforcement: Tighter regulations and penalties for violations.
  • Upgraded Emergency Response Systems: Better medical assistance for accident victims.

Contrasting National Statistics

While Himachal Pradesh made progress in reducing road mishaps, the national scenario remains concerning. India reported 1.73 lakh road fatalities and 4.63 lakh injuries in 2023, translating to 474 deaths daily or one life lost every three minutes. Official data for 2024 is awaited.

Chief Minister’s Appeal

Despite the encouraging trends, Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized the need for continued vigilance.
“Even one life lost is too many. We will persist in our efforts to make roads safer and reduce accidents further,” he said.

He also urged citizens to cooperate by adhering to traffic rules, avoiding over-speeding, and refraining from reckless driving. “Public participation is vital to achieving our vision of safer roads,” he added.

Commitment to Road Safety

The State Government reiterated its commitment to improving road safety, promising to leave no stone unturned in its mission to safeguard lives. With consistent efforts and public cooperation, Himachal Pradesh aims to set a benchmark in road safety across the nation.
