The Himachal Pradesh Government, under the leadership of CM Sukhu, is making determined efforts to equip the state’s youth with future-ready skills in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data science. Recognizing the growing demand for skilled professionals in the digital domain, the government is actively working to transform Himachal into an emerging IT hub of the country.

In a key initiative, Rajiv Gandhi Government College, Nagrota Bagwan will now offer degree courses in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, aimed at preparing students for careers in high-demand technological fields. Additional institutions across the state are also expanding their academic offerings. The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Engineering and Technology, Pragatinagar (Shimla), will introduce a civil engineering degree, while Government Polytechnic Sundernagar (Mandi) has been approved to offer a diploma in Computer Science and Engineering (AI & Machine Learning). The government has assured that adequate faculty will be appointed to ensure successful implementation of these new-age courses.

To support innovation and entrepreneurship, the government is also establishing a Digital University in Ghumarwin, Bilaspur district, through a public-private partnership and self-financing model. The university will focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, skill development, and vocational studies, and aims to become a center of excellence in nurturing entrepreneurial talent and innovative thinking among youth.

Another major technological initiative is the proposed drone taxi service, set to be launched during the current financial year. This will significantly enhance connectivity to remote areas, enabling faster delivery of agricultural produce and medical supplies. To modernize agriculture and horticulture, drone stations will be established in Hamirpur, Mandi, and Kangra districts. The Chief Minister emphasized the role of drone technology across multiple sectors including agriculture, healthcare, and disaster management, aligning with the state’s Green Himachal Vision.

To build capacity in drone operations, the government has already trained 243 youth in drone technology through Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the state in 2024–25. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote both employment and self-employment opportunities in emerging technology sectors.

Additionally, to foster a robust innovation ecosystem, the state government is setting up an Innovation Fund of ₹2 crore, which will support young innovators in transforming their ideas into viable ventures.

These strategic initiatives in education, technology, and innovation mark a significant step towards empowering the youth, expanding career opportunities, and steering Himachal Pradesh toward a digitally-driven, knowledge-based economy.
