The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a three-day orange alert for Himachal Pradesh, warning of widespread rain, hailstorms, and snowfall as an active western disturbance along with a cyclonic circulation continues to influence the region’s weather.
The wet spell persisted on Wednesday, with the higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti witnessing fresh snowfall. Keylong recorded around 3 cm of snow, while Kukumseri received 3.6 cm. Light snow was also reported in Gondhla and nearby high-altitude areas, keeping temperatures extremely low. Dark clouds hovered over the state from early morning, signaling continued unstable weather.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain and snowfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at several places over the next three days. The fresh snowfall has attracted tourists, leading to a surge in visitors heading to Manali and Shimla to experience winter conditions. However, the influx of vehicles has caused traffic challenges, with police in Lahaul-Spiti and Kullu busy managing roads and rescuing stranded vehicles disrupted by snow.
Meteorologists said multiple western disturbances and the cyclonic circulation are expected to keep temperatures low across the state throughout the week, prolonging wet conditions. Minimum temperatures recorded included Shimla 10°C, Sundernagar 9.9°C, Bhuntar 8.8°C, Kalpa 0.9°C, Dharamshala 8.2°C, Una 11°C, Nahan 10.7°C, and Solan 7.8°C. Among tourist spots, Manali recorded 3.1°C and Kufri 6°C, while tribal areas remained colder, with Kukumseri at −1.8°C and Tabo at −2.8°C. At airports, Jubberhatti near Shimla recorded 10°C and Bhuntar 8.8°C.
The IMD has urged the public to stay cautious as hail, lightning, and strong winds may disrupt normal life. Authorities also warned of slippery roads and reduced visibility in higher altitudes due to snowfall. The ongoing wet spell is expected to benefit Rabi crops, apple orchards, and off-season vegetables, while giving a boost to tourism as winter conditions return across Himachal Pradesh.
