In a major step toward enhancing public convenience and governance efficiency, the Himachal Pradesh Government has constituted a dedicated Commission for the Re-organization of Administrative Units. The panel has been tasked with reviewing the state’s existing administrative boundaries—including districts, sub-divisions, tehsils, sub-tehsils, and development blocks—to recommend the creation, merger, or bifurcation of local administrative divisions based on demographic, geographical, and accessibility needs.
Headquartered in Shimla, the Commission will be chaired by Justice Dharam Chand Chaudhary (Retd.), former Judge of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh. The committee includes Advocate Vishal Panwar and IFS (Retd.) Rajesh Sharma as Members, with the Director of Land Records, Himachal Pradesh, serving as Member Secretary. Key Administrative Secretaries from Revenue, Finance, Rural Development, Forests, PWD, Jal Shakti, and General Administration will join as Special Invitees to provide inter-departmental expert inputs.
The Commission will actively consult local public representatives, key departmental stakeholders, and community members before submitting its final recommendations. In addition to assessing infrastructure and manpower needs for any newly proposed units, the panel will focus on optimizing resources and streamlining existing operations without imposing an unnecessary financial burden on the state exchequer. Supported by the Revenue Department and local Deputy Commissioners, the Commission will operate for six months from its notification date before submitting its final report to the State Government.
