In a major stride toward supporting student-athletes and promoting sports, HP CM Sukhu has announced a ‘Special Leave Attendance’ policy for students participating in National and International sports events. This initiative ensures that students representing the state or country in recognized competitions will no longer be marked absent in school but will be recorded as on special leave, based on valid participation certificates from recognized sports bodies.
The Chief Minister emphasized that this progressive move aims to promote the holistic development of students, balancing academic and athletic excellence. “This reflects a shift towards an integrated approach where sports and academics complement each other,” he said.
Previously, students participating in sports events outside the SGFI framework were marked absent, affecting their internal assessments and overall academic record. The new directive aligns school attendance policies with the reality of high-level sports commitments.
Reinforcing the government’s commitment to recognizing athletic excellence, Chief Minister Sukhu also announced cash awards totaling ₹14.77 crore to 21 international medal winners:
-
Paralympian Nishad Kumar (High Jump, Una): ₹7.80 crore
-
Ajay Kumar (Para-athlete, 400m, Mandi): ₹2.50 crore
-
Vikas Thakur (Weightlifting, Hamirpur): ₹2 crore
-
Kabaddi athletes: Eight sportspersons from across the state awarded ₹33.32 lakh each
-
Renuka Singh Thakur (Cricketer, Shimla): ₹13.32 lakh
An additional ₹44 lakh was distributed among other outstanding athletes in diverse disciplines, showcasing the government’s inclusive and equitable recognition of sports talent.
Comprehensive Welfare and Infrastructure Development
Going beyond accolades, the state government has provided extensive support to athletes:
-
421 athletes received ₹76.98 lakh as diet allowances
-
235 athletes were granted ₹6.01 lakh to cover travel expenses
These measures ensure sustained backing throughout an athlete’s journey—not just after victory.
Further strengthening the sports infrastructure, an international-level stadium is under construction in Nadaun, Hamirpur. This facility is expected to become a training ground for future champions.
Chief Minister Sukhu reiterated that this multi-pronged initiative underscores the government’s belief that “sports is not just a passion but a priority.” With these reforms and investments, Himachal Pradesh is positioning itself as a rising force on the national and international sporting stage.
