Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) marked its 56th Foundation Day with academic pride and cultural vibrance. Hon’ble Governor and Chancellor Shukla graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and extended heartfelt greetings to faculty, students, alumni, and staff.
In his address, the Governor praised the university’s journey of over five decades and its role in fostering academic excellence, character-building, and innovation. He urged the academic community to uphold ethics and value-based education while embracing global standards in research and innovation.
He lauded the university’s expansion from 8 to 52 departments, catering to over 7,000 students and 1,100 research scholars, and applauded the launch of five new interdisciplinary research and innovation centers. Emphasizing the National Education Policy (NEP), he encouraged inclusivity and modernization in higher education.
As part of his ongoing campaign for a Drug-Free Himachal, the Governor appealed to the youth to actively engage in awareness efforts. He also highlighted the urgency of environmental sustainability, especially in light of frequent natural disasters in the region.
The Governor released the university’s publications — ‘Parisaamvaad’ (student magazine), ‘Himshikhar’ (university journal) and a report on anti-drug initiatives. Cultural performances focused on the theme of drug abuse, including a folk song by Dr. Madan Jhalta and a presentation by students Navneeta and Lakshya.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Mahavir Singh welcomed the Governor and outlined the vision of holistic education, highlighting the importance of AI, innovation, and interdisciplinary learning. Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Rajinder Verma also addressed the gathering and reflected on the university’s milestones.
A significant highlight of the celebration was the signing of an MoU between HPU and the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), Ministry of Home Affairs. The agreement was signed by University Registrar and Colonel Manoram Yadav on behalf of NIDM.

Dr. Sumit Goel, Director of Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Hospital, also spoke about cancer prevention and eradication strategies.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Registrar Gyan Sagar Negi, in the presence of dignitaries including Rameshwar Thakur, Chairman, HP Public Service Commission.
