Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Rashtrapati Nivas, hosted a compelling special lecture on “The Expanding Scope of Entertainment in Global Contexts: Challenges and Possibilities”, drawing attention to the rapidly evolving world of OTT platforms and digital storytelling.

The lecture was delivered by senior journalist and author Anant Vijay and chaired by IIAS Director Himanshu Kumar Chaturvedi. Scholars, fellows and associates attended the session, which was also streamed live on the institute’s official social media platform.

In a detailed and engaging presentation, Anant Vijay highlighted how OTT platforms have disrupted traditional entertainment models and emerged as one of the fastest-growing forces in global media. He noted that digital platforms have not only expanded access but also redefined how audiences consume content worldwide.

He also discussed the complex dimensions of OTT content, including rising depictions of violence, nudity and the growing influence of ideological narratives. Pointing to popular web series, he explained how storytelling today is increasingly shaping social and cultural perceptions.

Referring to the pandemic period, he observed that content rooted in Indian culture and local narratives gained significant audience traction, reinforcing the global appeal of indigenous storytelling. He further emphasized that OTT platforms have played a key role in taking Indian languages and narratives to international audiences.

During the interactive session, participants raised pertinent questions on regulation, censorship, freedom of expression, AI, and the impact of digital media on youth. Responding to these concerns, Anant Vijay underlined the need to balance creative freedom with social responsibility and stressed the growing importance of media literacy in a rapidly changing digital ecosystem.

The discussion also delved into the intersection of cinema, literature, media and digital culture, highlighting shifting audience behaviour and increasing commercialization of entertainment. Participants described the session as highly insightful, contemporary and intellectually stimulating.

Anant Vijay, a National Award-winning journalist and cultural commentator, currently serves as Editor (Features) at Dainik Jagran and is widely known for his work on media, cinema and cultural studies. Akhilesh Pathak noted that the lecture generated strong engagement and appreciation among participants for its relevance and depth.
