With temperatures steadily rising across several parts of the country, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued detailed heatwave advisories and precautionary guidelines for citizens.
The warning comes as large parts of northwest, central, and peninsular India continue to record maximum temperatures in the range of 40°C to 44°C. The highest temperature of 44.5°C was reported from Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan, signalling intensifying heat conditions in several regions.
According to IMD, heatwave conditions are likely to develop in isolated pockets of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and central India over the coming days. Coastal and eastern regions are expected to face hot and humid weather, while parts of north India may experience warm night conditions, further adding to heat stress.
The department noted that temperatures are expected to remain stable in northwest India until April 27, after which a gradual decline is likely. However, central and other regions may see fluctuating trends with intermittent rises before easing.
In its advisory, IMD has urged people to take precautionary measures such as avoiding direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and limiting outdoor physical activity. Special caution has been advised for children, the elderly, and those with existing health conditions.
The agency warned that heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be prevented with timely awareness and precaution. Its extended forecast suggests that heatwave conditions may persist over the next week across parts of northwest, central India, and select southern regions including Kerala and Mahe.
Hot and humid conditions are also likely along coastal states such as Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, while warm nights may continue in northern plains, worsening overall discomfort.
As per IMD’s seasonal outlook for April to June 2026, several regions across east, central, and northwest India are expected to witness above-normal heatwave days, highlighting the need for sustained preparedness.
The IMD has made its detailed heatwave guidance, including safety tips and do’s and don’ts, available on its official website to help citizens and local authorities mitigate risks and respond effectively to extreme weather conditions.
