Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh on Thursday inaugurated India’s first “SkyCast” aviation weather monitoring system at IGI Airport, New Delhi, aimed at reducing fog-related flight delays, diversions and cancellations.
Developed under “Mission Mausam,” the advanced system provides real-time weather intelligence to pilots and airport authorities, improving safety during take-offs and landings.
With the launch, India has become the 19th country in the world to deploy such an integrated aviation weather monitoring system. The next SkyCast facility will come up at Jewar Airport before expanding to other airports nationwide.
The system combines advanced technologies including Radar Wind Profiler, Ground-based Fog Aerosol Spectrometer and Lidar Ceilometer to monitor fog, turbulence, wind and visibility up to three kilometres above the airport.
Dr. Jitendra Singh said the initiative marks the beginning of a “fog-free, weather-smart aviation era” in India and will significantly improve operational efficiency and passenger convenience.
