In a major employment and infrastructure boost, the Himachal Pradesh Government, under the leadership of CM Sukhu, has approved the recruitment of over 2,600 youth in Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL). The recruitment includes 1,602 Bijli Upbhogta Mitras and 1,000 T-Mates, aimed at improving electricity services and addressing the acute shortage of field staff across the state.
According to a Government Spokesperson, this is the largest recruitment drive in HPSEBL in recent years. The move comes in response to 3,049 vacant posts out of 4,009 sanctioned T-Mate positions, which have been negatively impacting the board’s field operations and delivery of essential power services.
To mitigate this shortage and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply, the Government has decided to engage Bijli Upbhogta Mitras at the circle level, in addition to filling 1,000 T-Mate posts. These new recruits will significantly enhance HPSEBL’s on-ground capacity, especially in areas related to power line maintenance, disaster response, and consumer services.
The Bijli Upbhogta Mitras will be appointed by an authorized government agency from among eligible local candidates. Applicants must have passed Matriculation and hold an ITI certificate in Electrical or Wireman trade from a recognized institution. The prescribed age limit is 18 to 30 years.
The Spokesperson emphasized that field staff are the backbone of HPSEBL, playing a crucial role in maintaining power infrastructure and restoring services during emergencies. With electricity being an essential service, strengthening this workforce will not only ensure efficient service delivery but also improve disaster response times and consumer satisfaction.
Sukhu stated that the Government remains committed to empowering the youth through employment. Over the past two and a half years, 23,191 youth have been employed in the government sector alone. The state will continue to explore new avenues for both employment and self-employment, aiming to build a self-reliant and progressive Himachal Pradesh.
This decision reflects a dual-focus strategy — strengthening essential services while simultaneously addressing unemployment and skill utilization among the state’s youth.
