MGNREGA Norms Eased for Rural Repair: CM

In response to the widespread devastation caused by relentless monsoon rains, the Himachal Pradesh Government has relaxed norms under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) to speed up the repair and restoration of damaged rural infrastructure.

CM Sukhu said that heavy rains, cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides have caused severe damage across the state—disrupting agriculture, horticulture, livestock, and essential rural infrastructure. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring swift relief and rehabilitation for the affected communities.

To fast-track recovery efforts, Deputy Commissioners have been authorized to approve new MGNREGA works without prior approval from gram sabhas. These approvals will be regularized later through ex-post facto clearance from gram sabha, panchayat samiti, and zila parishad—an essential step considering the practical difficulties of convening such meetings during extreme weather conditions.

The state government has also relaxed the previous limit of 20 works per gram panchayat, allowing all categories of projects—including land development—to be undertaken as needed. Additionally, the financial ceiling for individual land development works has been increased from ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh per beneficiary.

CM Sukhu emphasized that this move will not only help in rebuilding vital infrastructure but also provide critical employment opportunities to rural residents during this difficult time. He assured that the state is making every effort to stand by those affected and ensure their speedy recovery.
