President of India, Droupadi Murmu, inaugurated a two-day literary conference titled “How Much Has Literature Changed?” at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre on May 29, 2025.
In her address, the President expressed deep respect for literature, recalling her personal connection with literary works since her student days. She thanked the Ministry of Culture and Sahitya Akademi for organizing the event and bringing distinguished litterateurs to Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Highlighting India’s rich linguistic and literary diversity, the President noted that despite the many languages and dialects, a shared sense of Indianness unites the nation’s literature. She emphasized that all Indian languages and their literary traditions hold equal significance for her.
Discussing the evolution of literature, President Murmu stated that while societal changes have influenced literary themes, the core human values of love, empathy, and compassion continue to anchor timeless works. She remarked that modern literature is no longer prescriptive but rather reflective, with writers serving as fellow travelers who help readers see and feel the world differently.
The conference will continue with sessions on themes like “Feminist Literature of India: Breaking New Grounds”, “Change in Literature vs. Literature of Change”, and “New Directions of Indian Literature in Global Perspective.” It will conclude with a tribute to Devi Ahilyabai Holkar on her 300th birth anniversary.
