Prof. Chaturvedi Takes Charge at IIAS Shimla

Prof. Himanshu Chaturvedi, a renowned historian and former Head of the Department of History at Gorakhpur University, officially took over as Director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla, on August 14, 2025. Following his assumption of office, he conducted an introductory meeting with the Section Officers and Fellows of the Institute, where discussions focused on ongoing academic activities, administrative priorities, and the future roadmap for interdisciplinary research.

In his address, Prof. Chaturvedi emphasized the significance of IIAS’s intellectual legacy, stating, “The glorious history and intellectual tradition of IIAS attract scholars from across India and the world. My priority will be to elevate the Institute’s research profile on the global stage and foster stronger interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration.”

With over 37 years of teaching and research experience, Prof. Chaturvedi has held several prominent academic and administrative roles. He is currently serving his second term as a member of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and has contributed significantly to historical studies through research, editorial work, and mentoring. His previous roles include Director of the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Research Chair and leadership positions at Gorakhpur University.

He has supervised numerous doctoral and post-doctoral projects and published extensively in national and international forums. Notably, he served on the editorial board of India: Mother of Democracy, published by the National Book Trust during India’s G-20 presidency.

Key Contributions and National Engagements

  • Coordinated key research projects, including the ICHR’s Cultural Contribution of Geeta Press and the Ministry of Culture’s Unsung National Heroes of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Played a leading role in commemorating the centenary of the Chauri-Chaura movement.
  • Delivered over 150 invited lectures across the country.
  • Served on advisory and curriculum committees, including ICSSR (NRC), JNU, UGC’s History Curriculum Committee under NEP (LOCF), and multiple academic councils nationwide.

In addition to academic contributions, Prof. Chaturvedi has actively participated in sports and university administration. His past roles include:

  • President of the Athletics Association
  • Vice-President of the University Delegacy
  • Executive Council Member of Central Tribal University, Andhra Pradesh
  • Visiting Nominee at Central University of Haryana

Looking ahead, Prof. Chaturvedi outlined his vision to position IIAS as a hub for globally recognized, interdisciplinary research rooted in Indian culture. Under his leadership, the Institute will focus on expanding international collaborations, organizing seminars and symposiums, and fostering dialogue among scholars across disciplines.
