As the Monsoons roll by, the atmosphere at Bishop Cotton, Shimla is starting to get fiery from the excitement and anticipation of the 28th edition of the Rev Dr. Samuel Slater Memorial English Debates which started in 1996. This prestigious competition was named in memory of the first head of the legendary boarding school, Rev Dr. Samuel Slater, who was Headmaster from 1863-1885.

Over the 27 previous editions of the Slater Debates, we have witnessed some of the greatest young minds within our country and abroad. At Bishop Cotton’s we cannot wait to see what this year’s edition brings. We are sure that there will be unforgettable moments and memories worth cherishing for a long-long time.

Usually held in October, this is the first time in many years that we are hosting Slaters in May. Regardless of the date, we are always delighted to host the students of some of the most prominent schools across our country and certain visitors from neighbouring countries as well.

Some of the schools that are participating include GEMS, Dubai; La Martiniere Girls’ and La Martiniere Boys’, Kolkata; Cathedral and John Connon School, Mumbai. There will also be a number of local schools joining us namely, Auckland House School and the Auckland House School for Boys; St. Thomas School amongst others.

Over the course of the next five days, we will see teams competing against each other all the while making new friendships and bonds that will last a lifetime. It will be interesting how the local schools fare against the visiting teams. Along with the list of nearly 100 topics to discuss over the course of this competition, we also look forward to all the other activities and events that the guests will enjoy.
